Bauria is in Howrah. The jute belt is a chain of such towns running along both banks of the Hooghly, each built around one or more mills, with worker housing, the mill gate and the river within walking distance of each other. It is one of the oldest continuously industrial landscapes in India.
Raw jute is grown in the Bengal districts and in Assam and Bihar, retted and graded there, then baled and sold into the mill belt that runs along both banks of the Hooghly. A mill batches and softens the fibre, cards and spins it, weaves hessian or sacking, then finishes, cuts and stitches it into bags before dispatch. Government sacking orders and open-market export orders run side by side through the same looms.
