Made to order and in limited collections by the city's couture studios.
Most Kolkata studios work by appointment rather than off the rack. A first visit establishes the brief, the fabric and the budget; fittings follow, and the piece is made by karigars working to that studio's patterns.
Before you commission
- Agree the delivery date in writing, with the fitting dates on it
- Ask what is made in-house and what goes out to a karigar
- Settle the advance, the balance and what happens if the date slips
- Confirm alteration policy after the final fitting
