In December 2021 UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was the first festival from India, and one of very few anywhere, to be listed in that form.
The citation recognised the festival as a public art event and as a moment when religion, art, craft and commerce come together in the street — and noted that it collapses distinctions of class and caste in the public space it creates.
