A kilometre and a half of books: the largest second-hand book market in Asia, and possibly the world, selling since the middle of the nineteenth century. Several thousand stalls and shops, backed by the publishers, printers and binderies in the lanes behind, and surrounded by Presidency College, Calcutta University, Sanskrit College and the Medical College.
The Indian Coffee House sits in the middle of it, upstairs on Bankim Chatterjee Street, and has since 1942.

Worth knowing before you go
- Ask the stallholder. Browsing is slow; they can find things in minutes.
- Bargaining is normal on the pavement, less so in the shops.
- The Kolkata Book Fair in January is the other event in this trade.
- Eat while you are there — the cabins and the Coffee House are part of the street.
- Sunday is much quieter and many stalls are shut.
