The older of Kolkata’s two Chinatowns, in the lanes off Rabindra Sarani near Poddar Court. Chinese families settled here from the late eighteenth century, and the morning street market — pork buns, fish ball soup, momo, sausage, sold from baskets and folding tables between about six and eight — is what remains of it.
The community has shrunk from over twenty thousand to a few thousand. Sunday morning is when the old families still come.

Worth knowing before you go
- Six to eight in the morning. There is nothing to see later.
- Sunday morning is when the old community gathers.
- Chinese New Year, in January or February, is the other time to go.
- It is a residential quarter. Be a guest rather than a spectator.
