Kolkata has a Christmas baking tradition that belongs to its Jewish, Armenian and Anglo-Indian communities. Nahoum & Sons has been in the same wooden cabinets in New Market since 1902, selling rich fruit cake and cheese samosas; the queue in the third week of December runs out of the building.
Bow Barracks, the Anglo-Indian quarter, still bakes at Christmas, and the fruit cake trade around New Market in December is one of the sights of the city.
