Howrah is a separate city across the Hooghly, joined by the Howrah Bridge, and it carries the engineering trade, the railway terminus and the Mullick Ghat flower market underneath the bridge. The river itself is the reason Kolkata exists: the East India Company built here because the Hooghly could take ships, and the jute mills that made the city run along both banks for forty kilometres.
