This is the oldest Kolkata. Sutanuti, one of the three villages that became the city, was here, and the narrow lanes still carry the bonedi bari — the old Bengali family mansions — with their courtyards and their own Durga Puja. Kumartuli, where the idols are made, is here. So are the oldest sweet shops in India, several of them founded before 1850 and still run by the same families.
